Over the last 35 years, Sekou Bunch has shared the stage and/or recording studio with such artists as Quincy Jones, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Roger Daltry, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, The Isley Brothers, Roberta Flack, Envogue, Anita Baker, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, George Benson, Wayne Shorter, Marc Anthony, George Howard, Tom Browne, Lionel Richie, the Tonight Show Band, Kirk Whalum, Kevin Toney, Najee, Paul Jackson Jr. and Will Downing...just to name just a few.
Born and raised in New York City, Sekou Bunch was exposed to the arts from an early age. As a young child, Bunch showed great promise as a painter and dancer – both of which he pursued passionately. Upon receiving his first bass around 1974, Bunch proved to be a quick study and soon began playing local gigs and jam sessions. At age 17, Sekou teamed up with GRP artist, Tom Browne, whom he recorded with on the best selling funk classic LP "Funkin for Jamaica", which awarded Sekou his first RIAA Certified Gold Record. Sekou also co-wrote the hit “Thighs High” with Browne.
Sekou eventually moved to Los Angeles, where his career picked up steam. While based in LA, Bunch toured and recorded with the late George Howard and collaborated with producers Angela Winbush and Ronald Isley. Sekou was ultimately named musical director for the Isley Brothers, a position he held for eleven years. He also has the honor of also being coined a member of Quincy Jones' "A Team" along with session greats John Robinson, Gregg Phillinganes, Nathan East and Paul Jackson, Jr.
In 2005, Sekou had the pleasure of working on the Hurricane Katrina Tribute with Bebe Winans and the Tribute to Luther Vandross CD with Kirk Whalum and Lalah Hathaway.
In 2008, Sekou completed his album "The Next Level" featuring recording artists such as George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Boney James, Angela Winbush, Everett Harp, Sheila E., Rodney Franklin and several other major artists.
Sekou is also an accomplished actor with roles in "Byrd", "Coming to America" and he has come full circle with "Dreamgirls," having played bass in the orchestra pit at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway for the original stage production in 198. He also appeared in the 2006 film starring Beyonce and Jamie Foxx.
Recently, Sekou has worked on a Michael Jackson tribute CD and several jazz albums. He is also releasing a book on electric bass studies and a compilation transcription book on hits he has played on.
