About Roscoe Beck
Bass player and producer Roscoe Beck maintains the pulse, with a mainline to the blues.
Roscoe Beck first began to gain attention in the thriving blues and jazz scenes of Austin, Texas in the mid-1970’s, creating a stir with his band Passenger, and in early collaborations with guitarist Eric Johnson.
In 1979, Passenger ventured to Los Angeles at the request of record producer Henry Lewy, and Roscoe soon found himself in a recording studio adding finishing tracks to Leonard Cohen’s Recent Songs album. Tours followed in 1979/1980.
Shortly after the Leonard Cohen tours, Passenger disbanded and Roscoe moved to LA, landing the bass chair with the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band and soon after embarking on what would become a decades long association with guitarist Robben Ford. Roscoe’s Austin connection also continued to flourish, resulting in recordings and performances with Joe Ely, Eric Johnson, Omar and the Howlers, Jimmie Vaughan, and many others.
In 1986 Roscoe sat in the producer’s chair for Jennifer Warnes’ highly acclaimed collection of Leonard Cohen songs, Famous Blue Raincoat, which sold over a million copies and made the Top Ten lists of both the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Robben Ford, and members of Passenger all contributed to the much-celebrated recording. Collaborations with Cohen continued with Roscoe co-producing tracks on his I’m Your Man album and serving as musical director for his 1988 tour. In the years since, Roscoe has continued to perform and tour with a wide variety of artists, from long-time collaborators Eric Johnson, Robben Ford, and Leonard Cohen to the Dixie Chicks, singer-songwriter Darden Smith and guitarist Oz Noy.
In 1995 Fender Musical Instruments honored Roscoe with the release of the Roscoe Beck Signature Bass, in four and five strings models.
Roscoe’s recent solo release Walk On, features guest artists James Cotton, Robben Ford, Kim Wilson, Neil Larsen. Eric Johnson, Omar Dykes, David Grissom, Mike Cross, Ruthie Foster, Greg Koch, Malford Milligan, and many others. Most recently, Roscoe released a two hour bass lesson (accompanied by Robben Ford) for the iPad app The Music Path As a man who’s dedicated his life to making remarkable music, and knows his way around quality gear, Roscoe uses TC’s Corona Chorus and PolyTune; the RH750 bass amp and the RS210 and RS112 cabinets to faithfully reproduce his trademark sound.
