Winston Blissett プロフィール
You’ve probably encountered the cool groove of Winston Blissett on your radio at some point in time. He has a formidable resume of who’s who in pop music.
However, pop is not all this stylish player is about. Fans of trip hop legends Massive Attack may be even more familiar with this rock solid bass player, seeing as he’s the foundation of the Bristol band’s prodigious sound both on album and live.
But before Blissett even got into the world of pop and atmospheric soundscaping, he played gospel music at New Testament Church, sharing a similar background with other great players whose groove have been shaped by the sanctity of the church room.
His first break as a professional musician came with the band Headline. They signed to Virgin Records, but only lasted a year. Blissett then formed Bumble & The Beez with Mykaell Riley and won a contract with EMI Records in 1981.
However, it was first a couple of years later his work as a studio and touring musician kicked off. Working hard and professionally to make a name for himself, his next big break came along in 1990, touring with English singer Lisa Stanfield’s band.
Since that time, Winston has worked with many of the world’s leading pop, jazz, R&b, gospel & blues bands and artist. Notably recording and touring with Massive Attack – just check out the opening track “Angel” of their 1998-album “Mezzanine” for Blissett’s brooding bass line - Boy George and Tom Robinson.
He has also recorded with big mainstream names as English singer-songwriter James Morrison, Take That-bad boy Robbie Williams, Aussie pop-princess Kylie Minogue, legendary Cher, the smooth singer Lionel Richie, Genesis frontman and drummer Phil Collins, ravers Basement Jaxx, Mattafix, China Black, Denis Bovell, and teen pop group S Club 7.
It’s not only in the studio Blissett excels. He has also toured and shared the stage with Robert Palmer, Hamish Stewart, Jimmy Cliff, Jeff Lorber, and Swing Out Sister, adding some extra soul to their hot vibes.
Blissett spends his time in between recording sessions and touring, gigging with sax player Derek Nash’s funk group Protect the beat and also plays at functions and local venues.
