Stephen Murtagh プロフィール

Stephen Murtagh is the bassist in the exhilarating indie rock band The Academic. A youthful, Irish band that is predicted a very bright future due to its frisky guitar riffs, energizing drums, impressive choruses, catchy hooks and animated lyrics.

Not long ago, Stephen Murtagh and The Academic were playing battle of the bands competitions in their hometown, Mullingar.

Now they’ve performed at support gigs with artists like Noel Gallagher, The Strokes, The Pixies, and Kodaline.

They’ve also sold out tours in Ireland and the UK, and appeared at international festivals with solid hits like their debut single “Different”, and “Sometimes”. The former has been played more than 2.3 million times on Spotify.

The band’s rise to fame has been nothing short of rapid, and it looks as if they’ve gotten taste for a life more colorful than the one their typical, grey provincial town can offer.

Stephen Murtagh and his brother Matt Murtagh on lead guitar, together with fellow school friends Dean Gavin on drums, and lead singer and guitarist Craig Fitzgerald, created the band in their early teens.

The four friends are all former pupils of St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rochfortbridge, where it all began. According to Stephen Murtagh they all have great memories from “the Bridge” – a place that gave them great opportunities, musically.

Although they originally started out with the name “The Frescoes”, the guys left that name behind and officially stepped into the limelight as The Academic, in 2013.

The Academic are known to pull off some awesome live shows. The band has a remarkable ability to produce loads of songs which make the audience want to dance and sing along.

So, despite their band’s name, the guys don’t seem to follow the path into college and university as future academics. Instead, it looks as if they’re following their dream of becoming rock stars.
