Über Frank Bello
His surname may mean beautiful in spanish, but when coupled with the common first name Frank, Bello means "certain doom". His name is synonymous with the heaviest of metal and an anagram for "mean shredder" (don´t check, just trust me on this). Frank Bello undoubtedly is a living bass legend.
Already touring with the New York based group Anthrax as a roadie and guitar technician Frank Bello took a professional quantum leap in 1984 becoming a full-fledged member of the group, replacing Dan Liker on bass. Bello was familiar with the band in more than one sense - his uncle Charlie Benante was the drummer - and quickly became an integrated member of the group.
A couple of years after Bellos admission Anthrax rocketed towards widespread fame in the mid-to-late 1980s, soon being referred to as one of the "big four" of the thrash metal scene (along Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer) upholding the legacy of former generation heavy rockers such as Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. With the release of the now-classic late 1980s albums "Spreading the Disease", "Among the Living" and "State of Euphoria" the band secured themselves a solid fan base that lives on to this very day, despite their comprehensive exposure to Anthrax.
Many MTV-viewers - before the channel degenerated into a cluster of nauseating reality shows - will remember Anthrax-singles such as ”Antisocial” being in regular rotation on Headbangers Ball. (Some may also recall an epic MTV-contest where a female fan won the questionable prize of Anthrax coming to her house to … well, let´s just say; refurnishing it rock star style!)
With the exception of a brief period of playing with the band "Helmet" Frank Bello has been a permanent member of Anthrax to this very day - the group is still recording, touring and going strong!
