Über Derrick Hodge

The extraordinary bassist and composer Derrick Hodge has an amazing jazz groove and is the winner of the award Rising star – Electric bass by Downbeat. He has worked with some of Philly’s finest and has evolved into a versatile soloist with the impressive debut album “Live Today”.

Derrick Hodge grew up right outside of Philadelphia. He started playing electric bass in elementary school and continued playing in his high school’s jazz band. Hodge’s performance was amazing and his high school band teacher suggested him to continue his formal education at Temple University. He took the advice and so began his jazz journey.

While majoring in Performance at Temple, Hodge kept himself busy with some of Philly’s finest such as tenor saxophonist Bootsie Barnes and trumpeter Terrell Stafford. As well as reaping considerable session work with modern R&B artists Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild and Floetry. With so much going on focusing on school got difficult so while touring with Scott, Hodge found himself at a crossroad. Either he should go back and finish his school at Temple or he should stay on tour with Scott. He decided to return to Temple to work on his jazz chops and develop his skills further while finishing his education.

Hodge is probably best known as the anchor of genre-blending, Grammy award winning band the “Robert Glasper Experience”. He has also spent time in the cutting-edge jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s group as well as currently being music director for the R&B star Maxwell.

Hodge’s debut album “Live Today” is a showcase of his widely respected versatility and melodic sensitivity. He has created his own unique sound reflecting his experiences working with skilled jazz, R&B, hip-hop, gospel and classical artists. The record is truly honest, transparent and adventurous while featuring guest appearances from rapper Common, singer-guitarist Alan Hampton, RGE members Robert Glasper, vocoderist Casey Benjamin, and drummers Mark Colenburg and Chris Dave among others. The album peaked in the top ten on Billboard charts.
