About Justin Meldal-Johnsen
Justin Meldal-Johnsen's highly sought after skills and musical interpretation has equated to an illustrious career that has seen him contribute to the arts as a bass performer, producer, songwriter and musical director for artists as diverse as Beck, Nine Inch Nails and Tori Amos.
Having received his first bass at the age of twelve, Justin diligently learnt to play by accompanying the videos that were played on MTV, followed by 45's and LP's that he bought or scavenged from his parents' collection. During the 80s, his musical spectrum broadened rapidly through the emerging musical frontiers that included alternative rock, punk and experimental music.
Throughout the late 80s and early 90s Justin was very active across genres, recording and touring with bands such as The Elastic Purejoy and Medicine. In 1996 Justin's career really started to take off when he took over bass duties in Beck's band.
Over the years to come, Justin's adventure with Beck broadened and included recording the albums 'Mutations', 'Midnight Vultures', "The Information", "Guero", 'Sea Change' and most recently "Morning Phase", doing several world tours, making videos, TV appearances, as well as later on becoming his live show musical director.
Justin's contributions to the albums earned Beck and the band critical acclaim and a number of Grammy Award nominations, including the award for Best Alternative Music Performance in 2000 for 'Mutations'. The success of 'Sea Change' also led to Rolling Stone adding the album to their '500 Greatest Albums of All Time' list.
Justin has also been the touring guitarist for two Nine Inch Nails tours in 2008 and 2009. Other notable contributions and projects have included collaborations with artists such as Tori Amos, Air, Gnarls Barkley, Black Eyed Peas, Dido, Garbage, Ladytron, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Nelly Furtado, Blood Orange, Goldfrapp and The Mars Volta in the form of bassist, producer, or songwriter. Recently, he has also moved into the world of film scores, with contributions to movies such as 'Team America: World Police', 'Charlie's Angels' and Starsky and Hutch'.
Nowadays a lot of Justin's work takes place in the producer's chair where his keen ear for sound has resulted in the recordings of phenomenal records by the likes of M83, Paramore, Neon Trees, The Naked And Famous, Young The Giant, Tegan & Sara, School of Seven Bells and The Raveonettes.
As a self-proclaimed 'sound design effects freak', the TonePrint collaboration between TC and Justin turned out to be a hit, which spawned 'Bass Nostalgia' for the Corona Chorus and 'Justin's Delay' for the Flashback Delay.
